Modular move to Fort Richardson, AlaskaDuring the spring and summer of 2005, AFF Logistics moved 256 modular headquarters and barracks units to Fort Richardson, Alaska. We arranged and managed all transportation details, including trucking, stevedoring, port arrangements, barge charter, and insurance, as well as all of the miscellaneous loads associated with the project originating from various points throughout the lower 48 states. The two main manufacturing locations for the modular units were in Dallas, Texas and Boise, Idaho. AFF Logistics visited both plants prior to production to confirm that protective measures were taken for the marine leg of transport and that all necessary tie-down and lashing attachments were applied in the correct places. Interacting closely with the marine surveyors throughout the process enabled us to ensure that correct procedures were undertaken from the beginning of the project. That greatly minimized the possibility of extra work or changes during the actual transport. We chartered two 100' x 400' oceangoing barges and a 7800hp oceangoing tug for the marine portion of this movement. They made four “tandem tows” to Alaska over the spring and summer. We selected the most capable stevedores to load and unload the barges and worked with a transportation company in Alaska to modify six transport trucks to handle the movement from the Port of Anchorage to Fort Richardson. An AFF Logistics project manager was present during the loading and unloading of the barges. “Transportation was the one area we did not have complications,” said the manager responsible for manufacturing and installing the modular units. “And we thought it would be the area where we might have the most. We credit that to AFF Logistics.”
